Here are some tips from AirportWiFiGuide.com to help keep your laptop safe and to avoid problems dealing with TSA at the airport on you next air travel. The most important thing to remeber is that “there are no other person than you that can keep your laptop safer during your travel” so here are some good ideas to keep in mind when it time travel with your laptop.

    1. Packing your laptop.

Remember to keep your laptop close to you at all time on your travel. It’s highly recommended that you pack your laptop in your carry-on baggage and NEVER! put your laptop in the checked baggage. Airport baggage handlers don’t except people to put expensive gadgets in the check baggage, so you can’t expect your checked baggage to be treated as a fragile object. You should not store your laptop in the over head bin neither. You don’t want your laptop to be damaged by other travelers’ baggage during the flight.
New for 2008 is a regulation banning extra battery (Litium Ion battery type) in your luggage. It means that you can no longer pack extra battery for your laptop or other eletronics in your baggage.

We also highly recommend charging your laptop battery well before your air travel since you will likely have to turn it on at the security check point (#2) and of cause get on the WiFi – Internet at the airport :)
    2. Security Check.

More often than not you will be required to take your laptop out from its carrying case and turn it on for the Airport Security personal. It’s important to remember to keep you laptop battery charged. Remember to turn it on when you are asked and not before, so your laptop won’t get into its sleep mode and cause you more time trying to restarting it.

    3. X-Ray or Not X-Ray?

It is okay to put your laptop through the X-Ray machine. The magnetic field generated by the machine is not strong enough to damage your hardware. The metal detector on the other hand can be harmful to your laptop. It is a good idea to ask the Airport Security personal not to use the metal detector on your laptop during the inspection. Remember you can always request a hand check for your laptop like you would for your camera and films.

    4. Carry your original receipt overseas.

It’s important to remember to carry your original receipt when traveling overseas. When returning to your country of origin will likely be require to show the proof that your laptop was not purchases oversea during your trip and subject to duty. This is also true to all of your electronic belongings. You want to make sure you can prove to the Custom Officer that these gears are what you brought along on your trip.

    5. Reserch the power supply type at your destination
Do spend some time reseaching the power supply type that will be available to you at your destination. If you are traveling overseas more often than not the country that you are going will use a different type of current or plugs other than the one you use too. Do study your laptop power adaptor to see weather cover the voltage rage that you will need to power your laptop at the destination (most newer power adapter will cover the 110V ~ 230V which will work just fine.)
Plug adapters are readily available at luggage stores at a mall near you.

    6. Keep a low profile and always keep your eye on your laptop.
Do keep a low profile with your laptop. Laptop theft is still pretty common place at airports, so it is a good idea to keep the laptop close to you at all time. If you have to use the facilities, take your laptop bag along with you or leave it with someone you know and trust if you have a traveling companion.

    7. Locked you laptop case.

Don’t invite people to help themselves with your laptop and other gadgets. Lock for your laptop case is pretty cheap and easy to find. Pack your laptop away and put a lock on it. The little lock can make a big different in deterring theft of your laptop.

    8. Getting online at the airport.

If you are planning to do some Internet surfing on your laptop at the airport we recommend checking for Airport WiFi Guide (like the one here on AirportWiFiGuide.com) for airport internet connection availability prior to your travel. AirportWiFiGuide.com keeps the latest information about Internet Connection at major airports around the country. You can also share your own WiFi user experience at major airports or read other users experience like you.

    Swati,

I don’t recommend packing your laptop in your luggage on your trip. The chance of your laptop getting damage from being toss around inside a suitcase is great. I ounce packed a camera inside my suitcase only to find a damage lens when I open up the suitcase. The camera was well packed but did not survive the trip underneath the plain.

I suggest keep you laptop close to you. I am sure other seasoned traveler would all agree on this one.

    Thanks

    Hello

I am bringing back a motherboard from the United States. Will it be okay for this to go into my checked luggage (damage from security screening?) I imagine it would be similar with checking a laptop but I didn’t know if the case gave it any added protection. Many thanks.

Thats an excellent collection of tips for using your laptop when travelling. Many airports do offer WiFi services but you are right it would be best to check if you need to connect while in the airport etc. Its good to know that the X-Ray machines won’t damage equipment, but I will have to watch out for the metal detectors though. US internal airports can be found at http://www.CityWidePride.org website for American travellers.

    Chelsie,

I still recommend carrying anything that you don’t want to get damage during a long flight (that would include you motherboard.) It is best to leave you motherboard in the original packaging as this packaging will protect the delicate circuits from eletro-static charge.

Another reason that I can think of that you might want to keep the original package intact is that it might not look good to have an undentifiable circuit board that other wise could look like someting else to the screener at the airport.

It is best to keep it close to you (in the carry-on) and make sure you pack it well and don’t be surprise if security will want to check it out just make sure you let them know it is a motherboard.
